The Gerben Wasser trio

 

A very original name it is not,

but luckily the music we deliver takes good care of that.

 

Our trio started when I was 15 years old.
I was still in high school back then and got struck by the beautiful sounds of the Sonny Rollins trio, Live At the Village Vanguard.
Then and now still, I can only dream of sounding like them.

 

The band exists of three great musicians.
On double-bass Andrea Caruso.
Andrea is a beautiful musician and an extraordinary bass player.

What makes him so special is that Andrea does not want to limit himself to the function and vocabulary of the jazz Double-bass.
He uses his bass like a horn player and surprises me every time.

On drums, the one and only, Henk Zomer.
Henk and I know each other from the start of my professional career.
My very first gig was with Henk in a small bar in Zwolle (NL).

I was 15 years old at that time.
Later I figured out that Henk Zomer is one of the biggest cats in the Netherlands.

He played with cats like Joe Henderson and Clark Terry whenever they would visit our beautiful country.

 

Henk is freedom himself whenever he is sitting behind his set.
A beautiful musician.
You don’t have to expect the downbeat though.

The Gerben Wasser trio is inspired by trios like the Sonny Rollins trio, Avishai Cohen trio, Brad Meldhau trio, Aron Goldberg trio and many others of course.

We love playing standards in unexpected ways, but we also love to play original music.
If I have to choose a genre I would put us in the post-bop genre.

 

Whenever we play it is not possible to escape the music. Our music is of the moment and the people we share it with. 

 

We love what we do and we love to share it!
